There is a storage limit of 300 MB per user, if your attachments are more than this size, your library will no longer sync between devices. There is no storage limit for data syncing.įile syncing will also share any attached files (PDF, audio, images etc). You can also see your library online at. So I see it as a way to support Zotero development, if you can, and in exchange they give you convenience.Creating a Zotero online account allows you to sync your library to the cloud and access it on any computer.ĭata syncing will share your library entries, notes, tags and links between your computer(s) and Zotero servers. So if you find in the future that Mendeley is very expensive, for example, you'll have much more trouble taking your own data elsewhere. Mendeley, at least, encrypts your library and makes it very difficult to take it out of Mendeley into other apps, without losing any info. They allow you to use it only if and while you find it useful. You are not locked to Zotero if you find you don't want to use it anymore and want to try other alternatives.
ZOTERO STORAGE FREE
You are free to take your library wherever. Fourth, in addition to giving you much more alternatives to sync your attachments without paying them, they keep your library completely accessible through the filesystem. You either keep PDFs locally or pay them for sync

The competitors don't give you as many options, I think.
ZOTERO STORAGE FOR FREE
WebDav, linked files (especially using Zotfile), and you can sync everything but the attachments free of charge, and you can even choose not to sync the attachments but benefit from the advantages of syncing all other information for free (like citations and full-text synced accross devices and available through the web library).

Third, Zotero offers a lot more alternatives for syncing without using their servers. I'd also argue that, despite this, Zotero works better than the alternatives, but that's a matter of opinion I suppose.
ZOTERO STORAGE SOFTWARE
And in Zotero, you are supporting the development of an open-source software owned by a non-profit organization, instead of big for-profit companies like Elsevier (that have, at best, some questionable practices). Second, proprietary software like Endnote or even Mendeley is more expensive, I believe, and sometimes prohibitively so if you don't have access to them through your institution. And in my experience, it is much more convenient

First, you're paying for convenience, as /u/valcroft said. That's why I've used Zotero for the past 8 years but only recently (when I got a better paying job) I was able to start paying. Will be glad to here your thoughts, may be we should open a forum thread about this if you feel the same I believe they want to push individual users to use other cloud services and I hope this policy of their' s will change since they are launching the new iOS App. And prices are absolutelty expensive in compare to many other cloud plans on the market.Īnother thing is, if you choose the unlimited plan as an individual you have to pay 10 USD per month, and if you buy institutional storage plan you would pay 10 USD per YEAR. Individual plans range from 2 GB to Unlimited, but the problem is it has only 6GB option in between. So, I decided to check out the cloud storage prices Zotero offers and I dont understand the reasoning behind it. (Actually, I do not care that much, because I have been using zotfile+icloud+pdfexpert on iOS and this works great.)

This seems to be the only way to read and annotate pdf' via zotero ios app. Since the new iOS beta app is released, I consider moving to Zotero's Cloud. I dont know if anyone using Zotero's own storage to sync all documents and library with this prices and given the free alternatives with zotfile.
